Barriers to Becoming an Effective Writer

An effective writer should be able to produce a readable, concise, accurate articles that readers can understand easily. Being a writer is easy, but being an effective writer is not.  The reason is that there is a number of barriers preventing you from being an effective writers. Knowing what those barriers are allows you to avoid them. Below are nine barriers to becoming an effective writer.

Barriers#1: Procrastination

One of the barriers to becoming an effective writer is procrastination. An effective writer should be able to manage their schedule effectively. Procrastination only makes you miss the deadline and ruins your whole schedule. As a consequence, you may upset the clients, and it could lead to termination of your contract as well. Equally important, you could miss deadline of their assignment, which could also seriously affect their score. Furthermore, procrastinating could cause you fail to practice effectively, and it is a sign that you are not determined enough.

Barrier#2: Lack of Critical and Analytical Skills

One of the elements in a good piece of writing is how well the writers can argue, organize, present their ideas to their readers easily. In order to do so, writers have to use their critical thinking for analyzing and elaborating the meaning of data, arguments and conclusions of other’s literature. Critical and Analytical skills also help them know how to use existing information, data and knowledge to connect, support, criticize or compare in their own writing. Owing to their critical and analytical skills, effective writers can elaborate complicated theories in comprehensive ways. They can paraphrase and summarize long-winded essay in a short single paragraph. Therefore, lack of critical and analytical skill is one of the barriers to becoming an effective writer.

Barrier#3: Lack of Language Basics

Lack of language basics is another challenge. A good piece of writing is not about just writing sentences. However, it is how you convey your message effectively and efficiently. Remember that using the same vocabulary too often in a single article will make your writing boring. You have to be good at the use of words.  For your writing to be more attractive, It is very important that you should know synonyms and antonyms of different words so that you can play around with different vocabulary for your writing.

Likewise, using different grammar in your writing helps you arrange and connect your ideas more effectively. You should know how to use present tense, past tense, future tense, active and passive voice properly.  Grammar boosts your ability to present your ideas in accurate and interesting ways. Plus, using punctuation properly increases quality of your writing as well. Without all these language basics, your writing will look awful despite your good content.

Barrier#4: a Lack of Practice

The fourth barrier is a lack of practice. While some people are gifted with writing ability, others may not. However, with enough practice, anyone can become an effective writer. Also, those with talented writing ability need to practice for a certain period of time until they can write effectively.

Barrier#5: a Lack of Perseverance

The fifth barrier of becoming an effective writer is a lack of perseverance. As mentioned earlier, to be an effective writer, you need to practice for some time until you can make it. Therefore, it is likely that you may give up along the way before you manage to master your writing ability. Thus, be determined, persistent and perseverant until you achieve the level of writing you prefer.

Barrier#6: a lack of Growth Mindset

The sixth barrier could be a lack of growth mindset. You are called a good writer due to your ability to produce a piece of good writing. Your writing keeps improving only when you keep developing yourself.  You have to constantly learn new things and keep practicing writing in different styles. You cannot become an expert of something with the same old knowledge you have. Be open-minded to feedback and experience shared by others, especially people who are good at writing. You will be surprised by the progress you make.

Barrier#7: a Lack of Enthusiasm/Motivation

The fact that you lack of motivation or enthusiasm is another obstacle of being an effective writer. Probably, you try to push yourself to be one while you do not have motivation or interest to become a writer. In other words, you do not like writing. Sometimes, you are just encouraged by others who do not really understand your personality and preference. Maybe you do not even have a habit of writing frequently, needless to say becoming an effective writer.

Barrier#8: a Lack of Ideas/ Creativity

Next, a lack of ideas and creativity are barriers for you to becoming an effective writer. Writing is like a piece of art. You need brain, heart, emotion and soul to write. There is no single rule or format in writing. You need creativity and artistic sentences to indicate how your ideas are connected, contrasted and supported one anther. Because of their creativity, effective writers can present the same ideas in different ways or make use existing knowledge effectively. Furthermore, the use of their words and sentences are just like a melody while you read.

In addition, people fail to write as they are lack of ideas and get stuck. Therefore, before you start writing, it is very important that you should know what you want to write by brainstorming your ideas first.

Barrier#9: a Lack of Favorable Place for Writing

The last challenge that might prevent you from becoming an effective writer is that you do not have a favorable place for writing. As a writer, you need mood in writing. You need to be in a silent place or room since you have to form ideas and concentrate on your writing. Any distractors such as your phone ring, notification from your social media or noise from your family members can be a big challenge to you.

To sum up, to become an effective writer, you have to overcome these barriers. You need to be strict with your plan and schedule. With growth-minded, you should be perseverant while keep practicing and develop your writing ability. Moreover, you should improve your language basics, critical thinking and analytical skills along with your creativity. Last but not least, organize your writing space and make sure that it is silent and good for your mood in writing.
